Fabio Fognini, 35, wasn't impressed with Jenson Brooksby's behavior during and after their match. In the third set of their Auckland first-round match, Fognini had some words for Brooksby after the American didn't apologize for a net cord on a break point.
After beating Fognini in three sets, 22-year-old Brooksby was asked about Fognini having some words for him during the match. "It's gonna happen in the heat of the battle. He (Fognini) said I should apologize for net cords, but I was taught that it's not really luck-based," Brooksby said of the incident.
Fognini noticed Brooksby's comments and reacted through his Instagram account. "So funny. Love new generation," Fognini wrote on his Instagram Story when reacting to Brooksby's comments.

Fognini was up by a set before Brooksby recovered to win
In the Auckland first round, Brooksby recovered from a set down to beat Fognini with a 6-7 (2) 6-1 6-3 score.
After saving a break point in the fourth game, Brooksby earned the first break of the match in the fifth game to open a 3-2 lead. Down by a break, Fognini had a chance to quickly get the break back but he didn't realize a break point in the sixth game as Brooksby opened a 4-2 lead.
Brooksby saved break points in the fourth and sixth games but he couldn't do the same in the 10th game, when he was serving for the first set. After getting a break back in the critical moments and forcing a tie-break, Fognini won six consecutive points in the first-set tie-break to win the opener.
Brooksby didn't manage to close out the first set when he had the chance but he broke Fognini twice in the second set and dominated the set to force a decider. In the third set, Fognini was the first to get an early break and open a 2-0 lead.
Then the lucky net cord happened in the third game as Brooksby claimed breaks in the third, seventh and ninth games to complete a three-set win over Fognini. It remains to be seen if we will see another Fognini and Brooksby match in the rest of 2023.
