Donna Vekic jokingly revealed she would cope with her Australian Open defeat to Aryna Sabalenka with margaritas. Vekic, 26, suffered her first defeat of the season after Sabalenka handed her a 7-6 (3) 6-2 loss in the Australian Open quarterfinal.
After the match, Vekic admitted that her service completely let her down against Sabalenka. While explaining that, Vekic revealed she would turn to margaritas to help her cope with the loss. "Now what? I will drink one good margarita definitely.
Probably more than one," Vekic said, per Index.hr.
Vekic's service didn't work against Sabalenka
Vekic managed to break Sabalenka once in each set but still suffered a convincing loss because her own service wasn't working.
After suffering two breaks of serve in the first set, Vekic was also broken three times in the second set. In the end, Sabalenka realized 5-of-13 of her break points. "My serve is one of my biggest weapons, so if that's not working, it's very tough out there, especially against her, who is not giving you any easy points, easy shots.
I think that's why maybe also I felt a little bit more pressure, because I knew if I didn't have a great serve, that she's going to crush it. That could be one of the reasons, as well. I mean, with her, you cannot really count on building the point, staying in the rallies, working your way up.
If you don't have good first shot, you're in trouble," Vekic said. Even though Vekic didn't manage to win the Australian Open, it was still a positive start to her Australian Open run. Vekic kicked off her 2023 season by representing Croatia at the United Cup, where she went 3-0.
After the United Cup, Vekic won each of her two matches at the Kooyong Classic. Then, Vekic won her first four Australian Open matches. Against Sabalenka, Vekic didn't deliver her best tennis and it resulted in her first loss of the year.
