Alexander Zverev's girlfriend Sophia Thomalla was absolutely thrilled and happy after her boyfriend won the Hamburg Open title. On Sunday, Zverev defeated Laslo Djere 7-5 6-3 to become the first German champion in Hamburg since Michael Stich won the title in 1993.
Also, it was Zverev's first title since the 2021 ATP Finals. After the match was over and Zverev got his hands on the champagne, he ran toward his box and sprayed the champagne on his girlfriend and team members. "I knew it!!!!
But as long as he wins... Make us wet as much as you want! (heart emoji)," Thomalla captioned her Instagram Story.
Zverev wins in his hometown
Zverev, who was born in Hamburg, couldn't hide his happiness after winning his 20th title in his hometown.
Also, Zverev was happy that he was able to end his title drought. “At the end of the day, this is my home, this is where I grew up, and this where I started playing tennis. It was incredible for me, incredibly emotional.
I can’t describe it in words, I’m just super happy right now. It’s almost like a first [title] again. It’s such a long time [since my previous title], 18 months, and I’m just super happy right now," Zverev said.
After the match, Zverev also showed respect for Laslo Djere. “I think he was the much better player throughout the first set. I just kind of stuck with it and dug it out somehow. Credit to him, he’s one of the most respected guys on Tour, he’s doing all the right things.
At the end, I’m just happy that it went the way it went," Zverev said. Now, Zverev's focus switches to the North American hard court swing. Next week. Zverev is scheduled to compete at the Toronto Masters. It remains to be seen if Zverev can continue his fine form in North America.
