American tennis icon Pete Sampras has announced that his wife Bridgette has been silently battling ovarian cancer for the past year. Sampras, 52, married Bridgette Wilson in 2000 and together they share two kids. After welcoming Christian Charles in 2002, Sampras and his wife Bridgette welcomed their second child in 2005 when Ryan Nikolaos was born.

Sampras, a former 14-time Grand Slam champion, said in his statement that the past year has been one of the most difficult and challenging of his life. In his message, Sampras also praised his sons for stepping up and being the best possible support to their 50-year-old mother.

"As most have come to know, I am a pretty quiet and private person. However, this past year has been an exceptionally challenging time for my family and I have decided to share what's been going on.

Last December, my wife, Bridgette, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Since then, she has had major surgery, pushed through chemotherapy and continues with targeted maintenance therapy. It is hard to watch someone you love go through a challenge like this.

However, seeing our boys step up and be such strong supporters of Bridgette, myself and each other has been amazing. Watching Bridgette continue to be an incredible mom and wife through it all, has been inspiring. I have also learned that it is very hard to reach for support when something is simply too hard to talk about.

With that said, i will end this by humbly asking for good thoughts and prayers for our family as Bridgette continues to thrive on her healing journey. Thank you," Sampras shared in a message posted by the ATP.

Although Sampras played his last match in 2002, he officially retired from tennis in 2003.

Sampras' wife Bridgette, who is a former actress, also retired in the early 2000s so they could focus on their family and raising their kids. Hopefully, Sampras' wife Bridgette will win her battle against cancer.
