Nick Kyrgios reveals he now has no regrets over his decision to choose tennis over basketball as the game of tennis has helped him make a nice life for himself. As a kid, Kyrgios played tennis and basketball simultaneously.

But as Kyrgios was growing up, there came a time when he needed to choose between two sports. Since Kyrgios was evidently more talented in tennis, the decision was made for him to solely focus on tennis. In 2015, Kyrgios said he "does not love tennis" and that basketball is his real passion. "If you could start your whole career/journey again, would you switch sports to basketball?" a fan asked Kyrgios on Instagram.

The Australian tennis star responded: "Sometimes I think to myself that I should of chosen basketball.... For my happiness, but then I think about what I've been able to do for my family and close circle and now have no regrets."

What Kyrgios said about basketball in 2015?

Kyrgios, now 28 years old, made the headlines in 2015 when he said he would rather play basketball than tennis. “I love basketball.

I don’t really like the sport of tennis that much. I don’t love it. It was crazy when I was 14. I was all for basketball and I made the decision to play tennis. I got pushed by my parents and to this day I can still say I don’t love the sport.

It is just crazy how things go. It’s good when you’re out there on a tennis court. There’s nowhere to hide. It’s all you, tactically, physically, mentally. But I just love basketball, I love the sport. I always have.

I try when I’m on the road with tennis not to watch too many basketball videos and stuff like that, to keep me focused, but it’s tough," Kyrgios said in 2025.
