Coach Pere Riba insists nothing bad happened between him and Coco Gauff as he has claimed once again that "personal reasons" led to a sudden split with the reigning US Open champion. During the grass season, Riba debuted in Gauff's team.

After Wimbledon, Gauff also added Brad Gilbert to her coaching team and the two worked simultaneously. That did wonders for Gauff, who won the US Open, Cincinnati and Washington during the North American hard court swing. But when Gauff returned to action in China, she wasn't accompanied by coach Riba.

When asked about Riba's absence, world No 3 Gauff said he left the team to address some personal stuff. Considering how much success they achieved early in their partnership, many were shocked to see Riba and Gauff parting ways.

“Everything was perfect. The situation was that I had some issues in my family. And you know, in that moment, my family needed me. I had to come back. And then, you know, was personal things.

I felt that I had to be here. For me, it was a difficult situation, tough decision. Both of us, we tried to find a solution, but when these things happen, you cannot control. But everything was perfect; I enjoyed it a lot. Good results; good improvement.

I only can positive things. I was living in the States, of course, when this happened. [I just came back to fix things in my family]," Riba said on the Functional Tennis Podcast. Meanwhile, Riba is set to return as a coach on the WTA Tour in 2024.

Earlier this month, world No 15 Zheng Qinwen announced that she has reunited with coach Riba for the 2024 season. "Reunited after some time apart, ready to embark on the journey together and prepare for the upcoming year. Back to the original time," Zheng announced on Instagram on December 3rd.
