Emma Raducanu issued an honest reflection on 2023 on New Year's Eve, acknowledging that this past year was full of obstacles and challenges but also highlighting that it made her "appreciate more" the life she is living.

After putting major emphasis on preparing well and getting stronger for 2023, Raducanu suffered an unfortunate setback in the very first week of 2023 when she badly rolled her ankle in Auckland. Raducanu managed to get herself fit enough to compete at the Australian Open but then didn't play again until Indian Wells in March because her wrist started causing her problems again.

After dealing with wrist pain in Indian Wells and Miami and then suffering a brutal 2-6 1-6 loss to Jelena Ostapenko in the Stuttgart first round, Raducanu decided to have surgery on both wrists and her right ankle. Raducanu is now returning to tennis in Auckland healthy and she is hoping she will turn the page in 2024 after a year in 2023 that was marked by obstacles and adversity.

Raducanu: It made me appreciate more the life I have

"2023 had its obstacles. However, after the initial disappointment, it only made me appreciate the life I have more. Looking ahead to 2024 from down under, feeling grateful and up for facing whatever this new year presents. (I've) been training well and proud of the steps I’ve made, now for the exciting part. Thank you for everyone’s support throughout the year, I’m happy to see you all again. I missed this," Raducanu wrote on Instagram.

When taking into account how much Raducanu struggled with injuries after the 2021 US Open, the most important thing at the start of her return is to just be pain-free and avoid injuries. After kicking off her comeback in Auckland, Raducanu will go to Melbourne, where she will make her third Australian Open appearance.
