The life of Aryna Sabalenka was today shaken by a dramatic personal loss. Konstantin Koltsov, a former Belarusian ice hockey player and boyfriend of the Australian Open-winning tennis player, has died at the age of 42.

The cause of death is not yet known, although many media speculate that it was a heart attack.

The announcement was shared by the Belarusian hockey federation on its official website, without giving details of the cause of death, but only specifying that it occurred suddenly.

Koltsov played for three years with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL between 2002 and 2006. He played for the Belarus national team at the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics as well as nine world championships.

"We are in mourning," wrote the federation on its website.

"It is with deep sorrow that we inform you that Salavat Yulaev's coach, Konstantin Koltsov, has passed away," announced the Russian club Salavat Yulaev in an official statement.

The loss of her boyfriend comes five years after the sudden death of Aryna Sabalenka's father, Sergey, also a former ice hockey player, who died at 43.
