Maria Sakkari is hinting that Stefanos Tsitsipas is not really planning on playing mixed doubles at the Paris Olympics as the top-ranked Greek female tennis player publicly revealed her views by stating that not seeing them team up in Paris would be "unfortunate" and publicly urging the top-ranked Greek tennis player to change his mind.

On paper, Greece has one of the most attractive and strongest mixed doubles teams in the likes of world No. 6 Sakkari and two-time Grand Slam finalist Tsitsipas. And they have been occasionally playing mixed doubles since 2019, mostly when representing Greece in team competitions.

After Sakkari and Tsitsipas agreed to represent Greece at the United Cup in January and to again play mixed doubles together, it was a major indication that they would also play together at the upcoming Paris Olympics.

But Sakkari - who is representing Greece at this week's Billie Jean King Cup in Portugal - made a surprising revelation as she claims Tsitsipas is not that keen on playing mixed doubles with her at the Olympics. When revealing that, Sakkari also sent a message to Tsitsipas and explained to him why they just cannot miss out on a chance to team up for the Paris Olympics.

"I would like to play mixed doubles because I really think we have a good chance, but as far as I know he's planning on not playing mixed because he's playing doubles with his brother," Sakkari said, via Gaspar Ribeiro Lanca.

"Everyone knows how good we can play. It's a 16-draw, you win two matches you're in the semis and then you get a chance to win a medal. That would be huge for our country. And the way that we play together, not many teams have that chemistry. I just feel like it would be unfortunate if we don't play together, but it's his decision. From my side I really want to play."

What Tsitsipas said about playing with Sakkari in the past?

After it was revealed that Sakkari and Tsitsipas would once again represent Greece at the United Cup, the 2023 Australian Open runner-up spoke extremely highly of what the top-ranked Greek female tennis player brings to the table as a mixed doubles partner.

"I feel like Maria is a pretty complete player herself being able to play any given moment anywhere within the court, and that helps me a lot as a guy to be playing sometimes mixed doubles with her," Tsitsipas said of playing with Sakkari before this year's United Cup.

"I'm extremely pumped... Maria and I refuse to give up. We both fight relentlessly and we try and utilize every single weapon that we have in our artillery to make this work for both of us."

Unfortunately for Sakkari and Tsitsipas, they didn't really do well at this year's United Cup, losing in both of their matches. That may have impacted Tsitsipas' thinking about playing mixed doubles at the Paris Olympics.

Sakkari and Tsitsipas' record together

So far, Sakkari, 28, and 25-year-old Tsitsipas have compelled a 6-4 record as a mixed doubles team.

In their team debut in 2019, Sakkari and Tsitsipas lost their opener at the Hopman Cup before winning their next two matches at that year's event. Their second win at the 2019 Hopman Cup was a pretty memorable one as Sakkari and Tsitsipas defeated Belinda Bencic and Roger Federer 4-3 (4) 2-4 4-3 (3).

Sakkari and Tsitsipas didn't play again until the summer of 2021, when they teamed up to represent Greece at the Tokyo Olympics. Although Sakkari and Tsitsipas entered among the favorites for the title, their campaign ended in the quarterfinal following a 4-6 6-4 6-10 loss to Ashleigh Barty and Jonathan Peers. While it was a very disappointing loss, it should be noted that Barty and Peers were also one of the strongest mixed doubles teams at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

In 2023 January, Sakkari and Tsitsipas played again together for the first time since the Tokyo Olympics and they went 3-0 at the 2023 United Cup.

This year, Sakkari and Tsitsipas failed to repeat their 2023 United Cup success as they went 0-2 in their two matches at this year's United Cup edition.

In their opening match of this year's United Cup, Sakkari and Tsitsipas started with a shock defeat after Daniela Seguel and Marcelo Barrios Vera claimed a 6-7 (5) 6-3 10-6 win. In their following match, the star Greek duo again ended on the losing side, but this time to Laura Siegemund and Alexander Zverev.
