Gael Monfils says it is absolutely not true that he is "an undisciplined individual" as the former world No. 6 claims he is actually a very hard worker who cares a lot about his fitness and tennis.

Throughout his career, Monfils - who will celebrate his 38th birthday in September - has been widely recognized as one of the biggest showmen and entertainers in the game. While Monfils has been able to achieve some pretty notable things and stay at the top for many years despite playing in the Big Three era, there was always a notion that he wasn't serious about his tennis career and that he would have achieved a lot more if he was fully committed and locked in.

In one of her interviews, Elina Svitolina - who has been Monfils' wife since 2021 - described her husband as someone who is committed to details and a perfectionist. When revealing that, Svitolina admitted she was also a bit surprised after seeing what Monfils was actually like outside the courts.

Monfils: The work I do outside is big

Now, Monfils is repeating the same thing his wife Svitolina said several months ago.

“[People say] ‘Ah, Monfils is not disciplined.' Guys, don’t think this because I’m enjoying myself on the court. The work I do outside is big," Monfils told The Guardian.

Then, Monfils directly addressed some of the stories and talks he has heard about himself.

"I’m lucky because some people [believed in me], but some people? Let’s say you don’t really know me, I call you and you’ve heard a lot of stories, you’ve seen my personality on the court. It’s tough [to believe] when I tell you I wake up at seven, I run for two hours, that I can do this work. It’s like this. ‘Yeah, I do it,'" Monfils added.

Meanwhile, Monfils was scheduled to play at an ATP 250 tournament in Lyon this week and use that as his last preparation for the French Open but on Tuesday he withdrew from the tournament.
