India will hold another International Tennis Federation (ITF) event, after the Navi Mumbai Sports Association (NMSA) announced that it will host its first International even in Vashi from December 9 to 14. According to the Times of India, Polish player Magda Linette, who is ranked 148th in the women's international tennis circuit and 13-times singles and doubles winner, will be the star attraction at the event.
All six courts at Ganesh Naik Tennis Complex in NMSA have been spruced up to host the competition. Apart from Linette, over 30 international ranking players from across 22 countries will be seen in action during the six-day sporting event, the report added.
"We have been trying for years to open a new chapter by bringing international events to the city. This is a good opportunity to test the world-class facility we have built. The tennis competition will be an annual feature in the city's sporting calendar," said Sanjeev Naik, the Member of Parliament chief promoter of the event.
"The ITF tournament in Navi Mumbai has opened a new avenue for promotion of the game," said Tournament Director Dr. Dilip Rane. The Indian challenge will be spearheaded by 293rd-ranked Ankita Raina and 425th-ranked Prarthna Thombare, and the winner will be eligible to earn $25,000 as prize money.
