The winner of the award was never in doubt, with Mayer being ranked 17 places above Federico Delbonis, and third candidate, Facundo Bagnis, was in contention only because he won Gold medal in 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.

Corrientes native started season with semi-final in Sydney, before anthology match in Davis Cup against Joao Souza, that Mayer won 7-6(4) 7-6(5) 5-7 5-7 15-13 after 6 hours and 42 minutes. He was completely spent following that match, missing Indian Wells and struggling with form and results all the way until Nice, where he lost in the final to Thiem, in third set tie break.
