Barbara Rittner Says Maria Sharapova Should Not Get Wildcards after Doping Ban

Tennis - German Fed Cup captain Barbara Rittner says that rules for granting wild cards should be changed after the Maria Sharapova controversy. The German claimed that Sharapova should have had to start her way back from the lower levels of the tennis circuit after her doping ban ended instead of getting wild cards to top WTA events but added that the WTA was scared that forcing the Russian superstar to start from zero would make Sharapova lose the desire to return.

Rittner also said that Andrea Petkovic will not be part of the Fed Cup team that plays against Ukraine in April since the German player is undergoing a crisis of confidence. Ritnner says that Petkovic needs to find a way to relax on court and that while her practice sessions are good, she is putting too much pressure on herself on the court and becomes tense and is unable to play her proper game.

Rittner said that World No. 1 Angelique Kerber, Julia Goerges, Mona Barthel and Annicka Beck are likely to be part of the German squad. Also Read: Sharapova May Play Auckland Event Next Season
