Caroline Garcia is very popular these days in France. Despite she had announced a few months ago that this year she would not play any Fed Cup match, the world no. 25 was officially chosen by Yannick Noah in the World Group Play-offs tie against Spain in Roanne on an indoor clay-court on 22 and 23 April.
Also Kristina Mladenovic, Alizé Cornet and Pauline Parmentier will play. These three players mentioned, after knowing of Garcia's withdrawal from WTA Stuttgart event that is played just after Fed Cup due to a back injury, wrote "LOL" on their Twitter account referring obviously to their compatriot.
In a press conference call on Tuesday, the French tennis federation chief Bernard Giudicelli said that Garcia's father and coach, Paul, had informed him of back issues already on March 7, adding how Caroline suffers the pressure of playing Fed Cup also due to the tense environment there.
On April 8 Yannick Noah told Giudicelli that he wanted to chose Garcia, who reached Monterrey semi-finals last week and beat Johanna Konta in Indian Wells. The following day, Giudicelli was told by Garcia's father that despite physical issues, FFT could take its own decision.
And they have chosen her. 'The player has time until Sunday to be there,' Giudicelli said. 'We know she has been suffering an injury but we don't have many infos. If she will be there on Sunday, the captain and doctors will make a general picture.
But if she won't come, we will be aware of her absence that will be considered like if she refused to play. Then we will meet at the Trade Commission and we will finally be able to see her, since I was able to speak to her father only.' As you can understand, Garcia's relationship with her federation and teammates is not good at all.
After losing to Switzerland on February, Mladenovic, who split afterward with Garcia in doubles in a short time, had apparently criticized her compatriot, and praised Amandine Hesse who had been chosen to be the alternate so that the team could be made up of four players and not three.
There could be the same issue if Garcia won't play. ALSO READ: Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia end their doubles relationship
