Evan King about betting: 'I get extra-negative comments because I’m black'

Betting is a very common problem in tennis, especially in the lower levels of the sport. People who lose money "because" of tennis players start posting threatening messages and verbally attack the players and their families.

In an interview to Indian Express at the ATP Pune Challenger, Evan King, who lost to Clarke on Thursday, said: 'Someone in some remote country, somewhere in the world bets for you to win. They obviously lost money and they pick crazy insults at you.

If a white player loses they’ll just get negative comments towards them. But since I’m black or African-American, I get that extra level. It’s unfortunate that we’re in 2017 and this still happens.' Social media have good and bad aspects.

They can increase your popularity, but also feeling bad seeing what people write. 'You want to have a bigger social media following to let the sponsors see you. But it also means that those people can also send you messages,' added Clarke.
