Simona Halep sets record earnings, won't set residence in Monte Carlo

It was the best year ever for Simona Halep. On court, she finished the year as the world no. 1 and off-court, she earned immensely. As reported by Business Review, the 26-year-old Constanta native, who has deals with Mercedes Benz Romania, Adidas and Wilson, earned between €20-22 million in 2017 ($25 million), becoming the most successful Romanian woman. She also broke into the list of the top-300 richest Romanians overall for the first time. Businessman and owner of the Mutua Madrid Open Ion Tiriac leads the list for the fourth year in a row, with a €1.7-1.8 billion net worth.

Interviewed by DigiSport, Halep revealed she was offered to set her residence in Monte Carlo in order to avoid paying taxes, which happens often among tennis players. 'I didn't want to do it. In Romania I feel home and as best as possible. I always played in Romania, and in the future I will commit to produce champions for this country.'

Before the start of the 2018 season, Halep will play two exhibition matches: on 23rd and 24th December in Hua Hin with Karolina Pliskova, Jelena Ostapenko and Johanna Konta. She will also be playing an exhibition in Indian Wells on 6th March with her coach Darren Cahill and the Next Gen American player Francis Tiafoe.

Meanwhile, Halep is dating the 34-year-old Radu Marian Barbu, a former tennis player who achieved a career high ATP Ranking at No. 1151. In recent weeks, they vacationed together in Portofino, in Italy, and apparently their friendship became something more after US Open. Halep was disappointed about her first round loss to Maria Sharapova, but Barbu helped her overcome it.

She also showed amazing football skills: 83 kick-ups in a row!
