Tennis - Tennis SA is planning a $150 million redevelopment of Memorial Drive which will include a new 6,000 seat stadium and could result in world-class tennis being brought back to Adelaide. The redevelopment would include other sports such as basketball, netball, boxing as well as concerts and other events.
The current Memorial Drive does not meet the requirements for hosting Davis Cup or other professional tournaments and currently only houses the World Tennis Challenge event. Speaking to Adelaide Now, Tennis Australia Chief Executive Craig Tiley says, “(This would be) a big step forward for tennis.
There is a need for a 21st century facility that can be filled with new, fresh content. We are really excited by this project and for what it would mean to the sport and for tennis fans in South Australia. We believe that with facilities such as these unveiled today, Adelaide can gain international prominence on the global tennis calendar.” Officials hope that the upgrade would lead to the Davis Cup or ATP/ WTA events coming to Adelaide.
