There has been a lot of controversy about Kaia Kanepi not playing the Fed Cup competition this week in the Group I Euro/Africa zone against Great Britain and Portugal. The team for Estonia will be composed by Anett Kontaveit, Maileen Nuudi, Valeria Gorlats, Maria Lota Kaul, while Kanepi, who reached US Open quarter-finals last year, is missing.
She wanted to play Fed Cup, but only if her wish was fulfilled: getting 100,000 euros in order to pay the expenses for her coach Dušan Vemic, who worked with Novak Djokovic until a year ago, and her whole team. The Federation didn't agree and Kanepi used an illness as an excuse for not playing this week.
Her choice wasn't definitely appreciated, and we will see what she will say about it in the next few weeks. Players usually get some prize in case of good results in Davis or Fed Cup, which are unknown, but there is no appearance fee guaranteed, although the federation pays all the expenses for you.
