Maria Sakkari forgoes part financial assistance from Greek federation

Great gesture by Maria Sakkari. The Greek player has refused a part of the money that her federation wanted to give her. The president of the Greek tennis association Spyros Zannias announced the news during a conference call prior to the Fed Cup weekend.

Sakkari, an Athens-native, is ranked 48th in the world and is the best player in the country. 'We wanted to offer her €30,000 as help for the preparation ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but she said that she would split the funds with Valentini Grammatikopoulou and Stefanos Tsitsipas: 10,000, 10,000 and 10000,' Zannias said.

'Tsitsipas is 19 years old (three years younger than Sakkari) and is one of the most interesting Next Gen players. This gesture shows great correctness and is to her credit.' ALSO READ: Roger Federer and his relationship with losses: 'It was almost painful'
