New roof on Louis Armstrong Stadium: seats, cost and innovations

Just more than three months are left for the US Open, which takes place from 27th August to 10th September 2018. The most important new thing is the introduction of a retractable roof on the Louis Armstrong Stadium that will also have 14,000 seats (3,500 more than the past years).

Now there will be two full night sessions, not only on Arthur Ashe but Armstrong as well. 'For this year's U.S. Open, we can guarantee up to 40,000 fans that if we were to get rain – hopefully, we won't, but if we do - that between these two stadiums 40,000 people will be able to watch tennis uninterrupted,' the chief operating officer of the National Tennis Center Danny Zausner said on Thursday, when media were allowed to visit the new building that is already 95% completed.

USTA invested a lot of money on the event's development in the last five years: $600 million, including $200 million for the Louis Armstrong that will be the first tennis stadium having retractable roof not needing an air conditioning system, as there will be some little openings at both north and south ends.
