Wednesday, August 1, 2018, was quite a day for Philipp Kohlschreiber. The 34-year-old German player got married to his long-term girlfriend, then came to Kitzbuhel in the afternoon and lost to Denis Istomin in three sets, 5-7 6-3 6-1 after more than two hours play.
Kohlschreiber was the defending champion at the Generali Open, he will lose 230 points (having earned just 20) and is expected to drop a little bit in the rankings. This week he is world No. 29, but he will fall at least on the 34th place, losing five positions.
In a press conference, Kohlschreiber explained that was suffering from the flu. 'There was nothing left in the tank...', Kohlschreiber said. 'The wedding trip? For now, nothing is confirmed, we are looking for some good offer in December.' Kohlschreiber had lost in the opening round at the Hamburg's German Open as well, to the eventual champion Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-5 1-6 6-4.
At Wimbledon he instead enjoyed a good run, reaching the third round where he lost to the South African and eventual finalist Kevin Anderson. He achieved his best result of the year at the Indian Wells's BNP Paribas Open losing to eventual champion Juan Martin del Potro.
Kohlschreiber was the No. 2 seed in Kitzbuhel, and he was definitely disappointed with the loss. But Philipp will still end the day being smiley, as he is now a husband. Kohlschreiber's wife often follows him on the ATP Tour, and she will definitely continue to do it.
