Bernard Giudicelli resigns from ITF Board

The vice president of the German Tennis Federation Dirk Hordoff has announced that the president of the French Tennis Federation Bernard Giudicelli has resigned from all ITF responsibilities after controversial discussions about his criminal court verdict.

Giudicelli had been elected for the International Tennis Federation board in September 2015, becoming a chairman of the Davis Cup committee three months later as well. In addition, he replaced Jean Gachassin as the president of the French Tennis Federation in February 2017 but he caught the attention of the tennis world in September last year when he was found guilty of defamation in the French court.

Standing as the leading contender to replace his close friend David Haggerty as the next ITF president, Giudicelli had been in all kind of troubles after that scandal but Haggerty did his best to keep him inside the ITF Board, with the ITF releasing a statement about the entire case.

Giudicelli led France in voting for Davis Cup changes despite not receiving a support neither from the captain or the players and he was one of the main figures in Haggerty's plan to reform the competition and turn it into something that no one in the tennis world seems to approve.

The amendment was passed in order to keep the Frenchman on the ITF Board but that all changed on Friday when he decided to step down from his positions, and the French Tennis Federation confirmed that news. It should be interesting to follow the possible upcoming turmoils in the French Federation itself because Giudicelli is pretty much alone there after recent Davis Cup changes, and it is interesting to notice that he replaced Jean Gachassin after another controversy involving the selling of the French Open tickets to the travel agency for a significant profit.
