Grand Slam Champions Maria Sharapova, Jelena Ostapenko and former Top-10 Caroline Garcia are to begin their 2019 season in Shenzhen. The tournament, which will take place at the Shenzhen Longgang Sports Center from December 29, 2018 to January 5, 2019.
In addition to boasting some of these big guns of today’s generation, rising Chinese stars Wang Xinyu and Wang Xiyu will be there to represent the home nation. The pair won the Wimbledon junior doubles title together, while Wang Xiyu also won the 2018 US Open girls’ title to become the first Chinese player to win this illustrious title.
“The entire line-up of players will be announced in due course, but this is an opportunity to let all fans of the Shenzhen Open know in advance that we are in for an exciting week of tennis at Shenzhen Longgang Sports Center,” tournament director Luiz Carvalho said.
Liu Wenbin, the deputy chairman of the Chinese Tennis Association, said: “Every year, the Shenzhen Open grows and continues to be an exciting stop on the world tour as well as being a very important part of China’s tennis development.
From the tournament’s first year when Li Na won the title, fans have greatly enjoyed seeing so many tremendous female players gracing our courts.” The last edition of this event saw Simona Halep outplaying Katerina Siniakova, 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 in the finals.
