It was the match of the tournament. It had it all. Fabio Fognini and Albert Montanes battled for 4 hours and 22 minutes before Fognini finally took it. The first 4 sets consisted of quality stroke making from both, and an entertained French crowd surely got their money's worth.
Montanes took the first 6-4, then Fognini took the second 6-4. Montanes then took the third by 6-3 and Fognini took the 4th by 6-3. Into the 5th they went, and Montanes served for the match at 5-3 in the fifth. He was clearly very tight and committed a few errors while Fognini remained solid.
Fognini served at 6-7, 15-30, two points from the match, before taking a medical timeout for cramps! Fognini footfaulted 5 times in one game after that! He somehow got through it though. Fognini could barely move after that medical timeout, but Montanes' tactics were so poor, hitting right to Fognini and allowing him to blast winners! Fognini ended up saving 5 match points before the end of it, saving them with several awesome forehand winners and a few nice drop shot winners.
Fognini kept it together mentally better than Montanes and finally edged it 11-9 in the 5th set. Fognini ended up winning 189 total points vs. Montanes' 188 total points to seal his epic win. In other news, the usual Federer-Wawrinka slam match ended in straights, as Roger Federer calmed disposed of his Swiss countryman in 3 easy sets.
Wawrinka was up 4-1 in the third, but you always had the feeling he was losing in straights. The look on Wawrinka's face said it all. He never looked as though he believed he could win.
