Alexander Zverev and Ivan Lendl are no longer working together. Last week the German player had criticized Lendl's effort. 'During a two-hour training session, for half an hour he always speaks about his dog or his round of golf.
He should be more committed", had said Zverev. That had sound definitely as a surprise, since Lendl worked with Andy Murray for a long time winning three Grand Slams, 2013 and 2016 Wimbledon, 2012 US Open. Already a few months ago Boris Becker had predicted that the partnership between Zverev and Lendl would have ended soon, despite the 22-year-old had said multiple times that everything was okay between them.
Lendl skipped the entire clay-court season, which raised some question marks. Through a statement, Lendl said: "I have a lot of belief in Sascha who is still very young. I think that one day he may become a great player but currently he has some off court issues that make it difficult to workin a way that is consistent with my philosophy."
Asked if he should have committed more, the former world No. 1 replied: "When it comes to work ethic I am quite comfortable that my record speaks for itself." Zverev has been dealing with a legal dispute against his agent Patricio Apey for months.
He will keep working with his father Alexander Sr. On Thursday in Hamburg Zverev defeated Federico Delbonis to set a quarter-final clash against Filip Krajinovic. Zverev had split with the former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero in early 2018.
