It was at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati that the 19-year-old Ukrainian teen Dayana Yastremska caught another player in her tennis racket web, dismantling no. 19 ranked Caroline Wozniacki's game in the Ohio opener.
She had tried to find her rhythm and was a bit uncertain if she'd do well against Wozniacki. Yastremska knew of her opponent's playing mantra as aggressive and thought she'd better become assertive right from the start.
The Ukrainian's strategy worked perfect and she won over Wozniacki in the first round 6-4, 6-4. The teen was on a roll before that when she defeated Johanna Konta in the opening set of the Rogers Cup in a bit over 30 minutes.
She had won the match in a shade over an hour and gave a smile and wave to the audience as they applauded her accomplishment. But for Yastremska, the victories didn't start with Konta or Wozniacki but from the beginning of her lucky and hard-fought season.
She had seen victories from Garbine Muguruza, Karolina Pliskova and Aryna Sabalenka. But the teen feels as lucky and appreciative to have won already three titles when many players with decades on tour have barely captured one.
She had won her maiden title last year at the Hong Kong Open. The teen followed that up this year six months ago with the Hua Hin Championships in Thailand. It took her nearly three hours to dismantle Caroline Garcia's game in three sets at Strasbourg to win her third career title and the first on clay back in May.
WTA players must be getting antsy by now as to the tactics Yastremska has on downing any player in her draw. She also has a knack for not dropping a set in many tournaments leaving her opponents wondering if they'll be the next prey to her fierce playing style.
It was above all that she relished winning her first match of a grand slam at this year's Australian Open. She was so excited and said at her on-court interview that "This day will stay forever in my memory. It's been a great experience playing here."
Yastremska has gathered more talents and strategies as she goes along and players might be wondering who she'll defeat next. She may be wondering the same thing but with consistency and determination, victories are not very far away.
