SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA LOSES COMEBACK MATCH Former French Open and US Open Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova lost her comeback match at the ASB Classic in New Zealand. The Russian once ranked as high as two in the world rankings had not played a match since Wimbledon of last year.
Kuznetsova lost in three sets to Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands in a tight encounter, 6 7 (2 7) 6 2 7 5. Bertens later advised that her hard work during the off season had paid dividends “I’m really happy because I practised really hard over the last few weeks to play aggressive and I think this match I did that and also earned important points so I’m happy with that.” Earlier in the day fellow Russian Elena Vesnina defeated the very promising young Canadian teenager Eugenie Bouchard in straight sets, 7 5 6 3.
Vesnina later commented regarding Bouchard’s future on the WTA Tour “She has potential and is a very talented player.” Tickets can still be purchased on the Tournament’s web site.
