Three-times Grand Slam winner Horia Tecau and Simona Halep are going after a medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, so they decided to practice their mixed doubles skills at US Open. Horia Tecau - who won Australian Open’s mixed doubles event in 2012 along Mattek-Sands and got in the semifinals of US Open’s with Vandeweghe in 2017 -, explained why he and Simona will play together at Flushing Meadows.
"We can create a strategy of playing together because our objective is to play at Tokyo and to have a pretty good chance there. So, every match that we play here, that we win here, matters for us, but, first of all, let's enjoy ourselves.
Mix doubles is an event a little different than doubles. The feminine part makes it more fun, more communicative and that's what we hope to have in our match as well”, said Horia Tecau for Digi Sport. Regarding Simona Halep, it is a known fact that she hunts an Olympic medal at Tokyo.
She stated her wish after winning Wimbledon. “I want to win any medal in the Olympics to fulfill everything I have done in tennis. It is a chance to play for my country and I have always loved to do that", said Halep.
After being chosen as one of the members of the 2020 Olympics team in 2018, Halep pointed out that she wants to be Romania’s flagbearer. “I will do my best in Tokyo and win. I also want to be flag bearer for Romania.
It would be a big joy for me. It’s a big achievement to represent my country. I would be close to perfection if I also won in Tokyo. I am focusing on a medal and I will put in all my energy to make it happen”, Halep declared.
Simona and Horia last played together in the 2015 US Open mixed doubles when they had to withdraw from quarter-finals. In the current edition, the Romanians will have a tough first mission as they meet the 2019 French Open finalists - Gabriela Dabrowski and Ante Pavic.
