Tennis - The foundations of two Tennis Hall of Famers - Rosie Casals and Pancho Gonzalez - are coming together to celebrate the second annual Kids Tennis Fiesta at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden as part of the National Hispanic Heritage Month.
The event will be held on Saturday 28th September and is expected to bring together around 120 children from the Coachella Valley Unified School District and ASES Program for a day of tennis clinics and festivities. Proceeds from this event will go towards resurfacing the aging tennis courts at the Coachella Valley High School, which has been operational for more than a decade and whose enrolment is around 90 per cent Hispanic.
Coachella Valley boys’ tennis coach Jay Samonte commented, "Our courts are in very bad shape and Rosie and the Love & Love Tennis Foundation have stepped forward to lead these fundraising efforts to resurface our four courts."
Among those who have been invited to attend the event include Mayor Steven Hernandez and Superintendent Maria Gandera of the Coachella Valley Unified School District. The event will include a welcome cocktail reception on Friday 27th September followed by a youth clinic the following day.
Gonzalez and Casals were among the pioneering Hispanic tennis players who made it big on the international tennis stage. The foundation supported by Gonzalez supports junior tennis in the area while the Love & Love Tennis Foundation, founded by Casals, has helped raise funds for various organizations including the National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL), Boys & Girls Clubs, Coachella Valley Housing Coalition (CVHC), A.S.E.S.
(After School Education and Safety Enrichment Programs), Andy Scorteanu Tennis Academy (ASTA), Rattlesnake Tennis Academy.
