World No. 1 tennis star Ash Barty, of Australia, will team up with German Julia Goerges for doubles on the WTA tour in 2020. The German is currently ranked No. 127 in the world doubles rankings while Barty is ranked No. 19 in doubles.
Georges has been ranked as high as No. 12 in doubles, having won 5 career WTA titles while Barty has been ranked as high as No. 5 in doubles with 10 career doubles titles. The German's best result in doubles at the Slams has been reaching the semi-finals at the Australian Open in 2015 (with Anna-Lena Groenefeld) and 2016 (with Karolina Pliskova) and the semi-finals at the Wimbledon championships (with Pliskova) in 2016.
On the other hand, Barty has had incredible success in doubles as well besides her success in singles. She reached the finals of three Grand Slam events in 2013 with fellow Aussie Casey Dellacqua. She reached the final of the French Open with Dellacqua in 2017 and won the US Open doubles title in 2018 with Coco Vandeweghe.
Last year, she reached the finals of the US Open doubles event with Victoria Azarenka. The pair are good friends and did play as a doubles team in Birmingham earlier this year where they reached the semi-finals. They also met in the final of the singles event there which Barty won to become World No.
1. The report says that Barty and Goerges will team up for all the four Grand Slam events and the big WTA events. Both players are likely to continue focusing on singles as well in 2020 with Barty hoping to replicate her incredible 2019 season and Goerges hoping to return to the Top 10 in the singles rankings, where she is currently ranked No. 28 in the world.
