We have seen several tennis players receive marriage proposals from tennis fans on the court during their matches, including Steffi Graf and Rafael Nadal amongst others. But it is not often that tennis players propose to their partner on the court.
But that's exactly what happened after the men's doubles final at the South East Asian Games men's doubles final on Saturday in Manila, Philippines. In an all-Filipino final, Francis Casey Alcantara and Jeson Patrombon defeated Ruben Gonzales Jr.
and Treat Huey. Alcantara and Patrombon claimed the gold medal while Gonzales Jr. and Huey had to settle for the silver medal. But it was Gonzales' girlfriend who may have walked away with the biggest prize on Saturday. After the match, Gonzales got down on his knee on the court and proposed to his girlfriend Michele Bumgarner, who is a racing car driver on the court itself.
Bumgarner accepted his proposal. 34-year-old Gonzales Jr. is currently ranked No. 210 in the ATP doubles rankings and was ranked as high as No. 131 in September 2018. He has won 4 ATP Challenger titles and 17 ITF titles on the doubles circuit - the most recent of them being the Las Vegas Challenger earlier this year.
Here is wishing the newly engaged couple all the very best for their future.
