The Tournament Director of the 2020 Volvo Car Open, Bob Moran, says that he is working on getting some more big names for the tournament next year after Ash Barty and Simona Halep already confirmed their participation in the tournament.
Others who have confirmed for the tournament include some big and familiar names on the WTA Tour such as Belinda Bencic, Kiki Bertens, Madison Keys, Sloane Stephens and Garbine Muguruza. The tournament, a Premier Level event, used to clash with the Monterrey Open in Mexico but with some changes to the WTA schedule, the tournament is now in the same week as the International Level Tournament in Bogota.
Moran says, "I’m not worried about Bogota. We’ve already got their (2019) champion, Amanda Anisimova. The field is great. We had to be more aggressive. We are still working on it. We hope to have another (entry announcement) before Christmas.
There are two or three more (superstars) that we would like to get. We are really happy to get Barty, and Halep has never played here before. It all depends on how players play at the beginning of the season. Miami (Open) will always have an effect on us."
Moran also added that the WTA will use their event as a test for two-week signup cut off as compared to the regular six week cut-off for all WTA events. “It’s been a six-week cutoff before the tournament, but players can now make their decision two weeks out. We are the only event doing that”.
