Tennis - Belgian tennis player Kirsten Flipkens has expressed her frustration at the current situation about the tennis calendar in a tweet she posted on her social media account. Flipkens writes, "I feel so useless. What tournament am I preparing for? For Gudalajara? For Miami? For Roland-Garros? For what? Also, if the Guadalajara tournament is going on, do I want to go there? I don't I'm not sure I can go back to Belgium afterwards with all the rumors we hear about the closing of the borders? ” The Belgian was planning to head to Gudalajara, Mexico for the WTA 125K event there which even expanded its draw from 32 players to 56 players but there are several reports that the tennis tours will be shut down for the next 6 to 10 weeks to contain the COVID-19 outbreak with some sort of announcement expected on Thursday.
World No. 1 tennis player Novak Djokovic has already flown back to Europe, which means in all likelihood that the Miami Masters is almost certainly canceled. Flipkens' situation is the same amongst most of the players on the tour currently, who have no idea on what the current situation is and how long it would last for.
Im feeling so useless!! What are we practicing for? For Guadalajara? For Miami? For French Open? For.. what? 😑 Also, IF Guadalajara is a go.. Do I want to go there? Not sure if I can get back to Belgium with more and more rumours about closing borders?? — Kirsten Flipkens (@FlipperKF) March 12, 2020
