Peruvian Tennis Player Suspended after testing positive for Cannabis

25-year-old Peruvian tennis player Arklon Huertas del Pino, ranked No. 586 in the ATP world rankings, has voluntarily accepted a suspension period after violating one of the articles in the Tennis Anti-Doping Program. Huertas del Pino has tested positive for cannabis, the plant that gives rise to marijuana.

The case was released on Thursday by the International Tennis Federation. Huertas del Pino took an anti-doping test on October 24 last year, during the ATP Lima challenger, following which his urine sample was sent to a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) laboratory in Montreal, Canada, which analyzed the test.

Cannabis is part of the list of prohibited substances of WADA. Huertas del Pino has not played tennis professionally this year after being informed of his positive test on December 27th. Earlier this week, he reached an agreement with the ITF and accepted the provisional suspension.

The period during which the player is voluntarily away from the tour will be deducted from the total suspension time when the final sentence of the case is published. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) said in its statement.

"Arklon Huertas del Pino has accepted a provisional voluntary suspension, pending determination of his position." Huertas del Pino's best ranking came last year when he reached No. 551 in the singles rankings.

He is currently ranked No. 337 in the doubles rankings, and was ranked a career-best No. 320 in doubles in January. The Peruvian player has won 1 ITF singles title in his career - coming in 2019 - and 11 doubles titles - 9 in 2019 and 2 in 2018 - with his brother Conner Huertas Del Pino.
