Argentina's world no. 7 Juan Martin Del Potro saved two match points in a marathon first round match against Cypriot Marcus Baghdatis as he defeated him in a three setter thriller and a marathon match that lasted for 2 hours 29 minutes, just under two and a half hours.

World no. 36, Baghdatis took the first set 6-4 but 2009 US Open champion came back and took the second set 6-4 and levelled the match at one set all. He forced the match to go into a decider and both players played some excellent Tennis to hold all of their serves.

Del Potro served to stay in the match at 4-5 where Baghdatis got two match points at 15-40 but Del Potro saved both of them and levelled it at 5-5. Both players held their serves to make let the match get decided by a tie-break which Del Potro won 7-4.

Former Australian Open finalist lead Argentinian 2-1 in earlier meetings and had also won their last meeting in Sydney ATP this year.

Del Potro was very happy to win as he said,

"He's a great player," said del Potro. "He fights like me every point, and we had fantastic rallies. I'm so glad to beat him tonight in Dubai. I played fantastic forehands to keep playing this match. Then in the end, of course, you need a little bit of luck to win these kinds of matches, and I think I played solid on important points in the third."

Del Potro will now face India's Somdev Devvarman for a place in the Quarterfinals.
