Former world no. 1 and 7-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal of Spain reached the Quarterfinal of the Abierto Mexicano Telicel ATP Tennis tournament in Acapulco, Mexico as he defeated Argentina's Martin Alund 6-0,6-4.
Nadal had faced Alund in Sao Paolo in the Brazilian Open two weeks ago, where he had eventually won the title. In Sao Paolo, Alund had managed to take the set from king of clay but Nadal gave no chance to him in Acapulco as he started strong and did not face a single break point in the first set.
He broke his opponent three times and took the set 6-0. Alund put up a better show in the second set and was able to hold four of serves. He got three break point opportunities to break the former world no. 1 but he could not capitalise and on the other hand Nadal got five chances and availed one of them to win the set 6-4 and with it the match aswell.
Nadal took one hour and 25 minutes to undo his opponent. The 11-time Grand Slam champion is playing his third tournament since returning and is on his course to reach third consecutive finals. He had lost in the finals of VTR Open in Santiago, Chile against Horacio Zeballos and then won the title in Sao Paolo, Brazil after beating former world no.
3 David Nalbandian in final. Nadal is on course to a potential final against world no. 4 and compatriot David Ferrer, to whom he lost the world no. 4 ranking few weeks ago. He will face another Argentinian in the next round, Leonardo Mayer, who defeated Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia in straight sets.
