ATP Dubai: Tomas Berdych downs the defending champion Roger Federer

The defending champion Federer met 4 opportunities to break the Berdych serve, but only converted 1 break point in the opening set. That proved enough at the end of the set as he won the set 6-3, having registered 61% of first serves.

The Czech recorded a disappointing 42% of first serves, winning 64% of points off his first serve and 58% off his second serve. He had 2 chances to get a break of serve in the set but was unable to seal the deal.

. Berdych took full advantage of Federer"s error-filled game in the second set.

He led 5-2 after they had been out on court for an hour and 5 minutes. In a sudden turn of events, Berdych was broken when serving for the second set at 5-3 in the hopes of leveling the match.

A dramatic tail-end of the set saw Berdych miss out on a set point at 6-5 and Federer on 2 match points early in the breaker. Berdych would have another set point in the breaker but the set was still not to be.

He saved a third match point soon after and manufactured his third set point at 9-8. Berdych won the tie break 7-6(10-8) by hitting a stunning return of serve winner on a Federer second serve.

After seeing 2 match points come and go in the 9th game, Berdych converted 1 match point when serving for the match at 5-4. Berdych won 3-6 7-6 6-4.
