Austrian tennis coach Günter Bresnik spoke to the Kronen-Zeitung about his relationship with the Thiem family, saying that 'the story with Dominic hurts a lot. It was almost a life's work for me." Bresnik and Thiem split last year after working together since Thiem was a youngster.
The 59 year old Bresnik says, “It is clear that the story with Dominic hurts a lot. It was almost a life's work for me. It is also very difficult for me to lose Wolfgang, who was not just a great coach for me, but a long-time friend."
After the Thiems, Jurij Rodionov, Dennis Novak and Sebastian Ofner also moved from Bresnik's tennis school to Wolfgang Thiem, which Bresnik says did not surprise him. "If I had the opportunity to train with a player like Dominic, I would always take it.
Not using a training partner like Thiem would be absurd " Bresnik was also self-critical about the statement he made a few weeks ago, in which he said that without him, Thiem would be a futures player and Wolfgang would be a club coach in Seebenstein.
"These are stories that do not improve the relationship. Of course, such a story was not intended for the public. But now and then I get carried away by such stupid statements. It may be a problem for parents if someone has been called a Thiem maker."
Bresnik says he is still not clear as to what led to the breakdown in their relationship. "I never had a problem with Dominic, never had a problem with his parents. How that came about is still unclear to me to this day", although Thiem has said in his comments that Bresnik is aware of the reasons behind the split.
