Reigning Wimbledon champion Simona Halep, of Romania, says that one of the best things about winning Wimbledon was becoming a member of the All England Club and the fact that she will always be a part of the club's history
Simona Halep on winning Wimbledon for the first time
Speaking to World Wide of Sports, Halep says, "The quaintest thing is that I got to be a member of the All England Club and wear the badge.
No one can ever take away the fact that I am now part of the club's history and I'm really proud of that." Halep says her win over Serena Williams in the final of Wimbledon was among the best performances of her career.
"To be playing the Wimbledon final on Centre Court against arguably the greatest player of all time, and to produce a performance like that; it still feels like a dream when I say it like that actually, but my name is on the wall so I know it's true.
I think it was one of the best, if not the best matches I have ever played. My level was high from the first ball to the last ball and I enjoyed every single second. I proved to myself what I can do. I proved that I can win on another surface, and especially a surface that it took me so long to fall in love with.
It also showed me the importance of self-belief and the power of confidence." Her current coach Darren Cahill also spoke about Halep's relaxed demeanour prior to the final. "The night before I had dinner with her and her team led by her coach Daniel Dobre who I have so much respect for.
There was a calmness about her not seen before and very different to the other grand slam finals. She was ready and as relaxed as one could be before a big final. From a pure tennis point of view, it was the best I'd seen her play."
Simona Halep is currently ranked No. 2 in the world and has been No. 1 for 64 weeks. She has won 20 WTA singles titles, including the 2018 French Open and the 2019 Wimbledon Championships. Halep has said that she will play the WTA event in Palermo in early August. She is still undecided about playing the US Open in August and said she will take a call closer to date.
