Kristof Vliegen has announced his retirement from professional tennis. The talented Belgian, who reached a career-high ranking of 30 in 2006, has fallen to below 400 in recent years due to a string of injuries. Vliegen turned professional in 2001, but never won an ATP tournament.
He did, however, reach two finals (2003 in Monaco and 2006 in Adelaide ), and won nine Challenger titles. A shoulder injury and groin operation eventually forced the Belgian to make the decision to retire, as he believes he can't compete with the top players anymore.
