Holger Rune investigated for homophobic comments

The former junior world number one, the Danish tennis player Holger Rune, won the ATP Challenger tournament in Biella last Sunday by beating the Argentine Marco Trungelliti in the final with the result of 6-3 5-7 7-6. In the last few hours there has been a lot of discussion, but unfortunately not about this: during the semifinal Tomas Etcheverry the very young tennis player blurted out with homophobic insults and there would be a video where it is clearly seen that he screams: "You are a shit player and you play like a faggot" Unfortunately for the tennis player the images are clear and after the tournament Rune released a statement and apologized for the comments through his Instagram account.

Here are his words: "I am young and I need to learn. Not that this will allow me to say nonsense like that, I am very sorry and I hope that people accept my apology, of course this will not happen again."

The defense of the mother

In the last hours, the mother of the tennis player, the Danish Aneke Rune, did not stay to watch and rather attacked the local TV TV2 stating that this was only gossiping about the work of her son.

Despite this, images of the video seemd very clear. Meanwhile, the ATP has opened its investigation and released the following statement: "The ATP is committed to ensuring an inclusive environment for all tennis players, staff and fans and there is absolutely no room for homophobic comments in tennis.

In accordance with section 8.04 of the Code of Conduct for athletes, the ATP is investigating Holger Rune's comments during a match on Saturday 5 June 2021 at the ATP Challenger 80 in Biella." The young tennis player rose to prominence this season for training with world number one Novak Djokovic praising him.

Rune explained in a recent interview: "I always feel great emotions when I train with the Top 10 because they have so many strengths that I can draw from and at the same time they are great guys who love tennis like me."
