Negative events are important not only because they allow us to enjoy the positives in our lives but also because they are a unique opportunity for change. Negative events, in fact, serve as a spur to change a situation that no longer suits us.
When we sink so low in our lives that we feel distaste about the situation, all we have to do is roll up our sleeves and get back on top with will and determination. Failure is perhaps the negative event par excellence but it is a necessary step to achieve success.
It is said that those who do not act do not fail, but true failure lies in giving up without even trying. When you experience failure, it's easy to get discouraged. There are two methods to consolidate our motivation: the first is to take responsibility for what’s happened; the second is to remember that every failure also represents an opportunity to learn something new.
The important thing, however, is to get back into the game immediately, just like when you fall off a horse: if you wait too long, you'll never get back on the saddle. Failure can be both an inspiration to improve and a push towards depression: it's only up to us to decide which direction to give to our lives.
In fact, the world doesn't care if we get up or bask in despair. To overcome failure, you also need resilience and elasticity. Resilience, in turn, requires introspection, independence, creativity, resourcefulness, humour, moral integrity, and the help of others.
Positive self-determination is the tool that allows anyone to find their own way. Positive self-determination is based on solid self-knowledge, i.e., who we are and what our goals are in life, and on preparation. In fact, being prepared is the secret to being able to take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself.
Courage is not the absence of fear, but being afraid of the right thing, at the right time and in the right measure. In reality, however, an individual is never truly powerless because something can always be done. To learn how to overcome our fears, we must first stop worrying about everything we don't have direct control over, and imagine what the alternative might be.
Being aware of all the disadvantages that living in a constant state of fear causes is an incentive to face our fears and overcome them. To be brave, we also need to curb anxiety, apathy, doubt, indecision, and excessive caution.
