Ana Ivanovic gets better of Victoria Azarenka in straight sets in Tokyo

Tennis: 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic ended a 4 match losing streak against the 2-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka in the second round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. In a clash of two former world No.1 players, Ana Ivanovic came out as winner in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to make sure Azarenka would not win first title of the year in Tokyo.

Azarenka had beaten Ivanovic in last 4 meetings, including the wins in the 4th round of 2012 Wimbledon (6-1, 6-0) and a 3 sets win in the 4th round of the 2013 US Open. In the second game of the match, Azarenka had 2 game points at 40-15 but she could not hold the serve.

In a game, which had 8 deuces, Azarenka saved 6 break points but got broken as Ivanovic had a 2-0 lead. Azarenka got the break back in the 5th game but Ivanovic broke her again in the 6th game to make it 4-2. There were no further breaks in the first set and the Serb took the first set 6-3.

Azarenka's main problem was her serve as she served 7 double faults in the first set. Ivanovic broke Azarenka twice to race to a 3-0 lead in the second set but Azarenka made a comeback and got both breaks back to make it 3-3.

But Ivanovic broke her again in the next game, which proved to be the decisive break of the match. Ivanovic held the next two service games and won second set 6-4 to close out the match in 1 hour and 40 minutes. This was Ivanovic's third win against Azarenka in the 8th meeting between them.

She will meet the seventh seed Lucie Safarova for a place in the Quarterfinals, who defeated the 17-year-old Swiss Belinda Bencic in 3 sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Top seed Angelique Kerber also booked her spot in the Quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Elina Svitolina.

She will meet the Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova, who defeated America's Coco Vandeweghe in 7-6, 7-5.
