Tennis - World no. 3 Victoria Azarenka will take on former US Open champion Samantha Stosur in the quarter finals of the WTA Italian Open in Rome on Friday. Azarenka, who is looking to get some matches under her belt as she missed two months due to injury, advanced when her opponent Japan's Ayumi Morita retired with Azarenka leading 61 20.
Azarenka commented, "Your opponent getting hurt is never the best way to win your matches. I hope it's nothing serious and that she can continue playing again very soon, maybe next week or something." Stosur, seeded no.
9 this week, used her clay court experience to defeat 8th seed Petra Kvitova 75 26 61. This was the Australian's first win over Kvitova in five career meetings. Azarenka leads Stosur 7-0 in head to head but Azarenka is not taking the Australian lightly.
"She's a very high quality player and a Grand Slam champion. She's always a very difficult opponent for me but I'm looking forward to it. I'll have to play my best against her."
