Top-ranked Spanish tennis player Garbine Muguruza won't represent Spain at the Billie Jean King Cup in Prague. Muguruza, ranked at No. 5 in the world, insists she has had a couple of demanding months and she needs a break.
However, Muguruza says she will be rooting for the Spanish team to do well at the Billie Jean King Cup. Muguruza hopes to refresh a bit and to be ready and well prepared for the WTA Finals in Guadalajara. "Unfortunately I will not be able to play the Billie Jean King Cup this year.
The last mi this have obviously been very demanding with the Olympics, Chicago and the new date of Indian Wells. I have not been home since July. The recovery on my ankle is taking a little longer than expected and I will spend the next weeks trying to get ready for Guadalajara," Muguruza announced in a Twitter post.
"I wish the team all the best and cheering for you to do very well. Thanks for all the support."
Muguruza hasn't played especially well recently
At the Indian Wells Masters, Muguruza suffered a shock loss in her opener as she was beaten by Ajla Tomljanovic.
"I get really happy when I get into these moments where I get nervous and I manage to stay calm and focus on just what's on the task," Tomljanovic said after the win. "Even when I have in the past missed my chances or had really tough losses against the top players, you're like, 'Well, okay, I'm going to learn from it'
But the next time you're in the same position, it's never really the same. It's always a new moment. But you can take the lessons before and apply it. The fact that it's always new, in that moment you have a problem to solve." Last week, Muguruza lost to Anett Kontaveit in the Moscow quarterfinal.
