Ons Jabeur withdraws from WTA Finals, won't travel as alternate

World No. 7 Ons Jabeur has announced that she won't be traveling to Guadalajara to be an alternate at the WTA Finals. Jabeur, 27, enjoyed the best season of her career in 2021. Jabeur captured her maiden WTA title in Birmingham and ended runner-up two different occasions.

Jabeur also made the Indian Wells Masters semifinal and the Wimbledon quarterfinal. "I am sorry to announce that I won't be able to go to Guadalajara as an alternate. I need more time to recover and prepare for next season," Jabeur announced in a Twitter post.

I am super proud of achieving my goal and my best ranking in the world: 7! Thank you for your support and see you next year."

Jabeur lost a tight battle

Jabeur retired her Moscow opener and pulled out of Courmayeur the following week due to an elbow injury.

Anett Kontaveit won back-to-back titles in Moscow and Cluj-Napoca to beat out Jabeur in the battle for the final spot at the WTA Finals. "Huge Congrats Anett you really deserve this spot. And the dress as well," Jabeur tweeted after Kontaveit beat her out in the battle for the final WTA Finals spot.

Kontaveit felt sorry Jabeur was left without a WTA Finals spot because of her. "Ons is such a great person. We've been friends for years, we're similar in age, and I've known her since juniors. She's such a wonderful girl.

I wish it wasn't her," Kontaveit said. "Honestly, I don't even know what to say. I didn't think any of this was realistic. I genuinely thought Ons was going to the Finals. I would have been really happy for her because she deserves it.

She's had a really great year and I've lost to her a couple of times. She's a really great player and an even better person. I guess that's tennis for you."
