No. 2 seed Simona Halep has retired from her Linz semifinal die to a left knee injury. On Wednesday, Halep saw off Jasmine Paolini in straight sets in the Linz quarterfinal. Halep managed to complete a straight-set win over Paolini but she injured her left ankle and it got swollen and painful.
Halep was scheduled to meet Jaqueline Cristian in Linz. The tournament said in a statement posted: "Unfortunately Simona Halep has to withdraw from her semifinals tonight after injuring her left knee in her match on Wednesday!
We wish you a very speedy recovery, Simo! Linz loves you! Please come back soon!"
Halep wanted to play but just couldn't
Halep's season came to an end on an unfortunate way. Halep was playing in Linz for the second time in her career and for the first time since 2012.
"Unfortunately I am not able to play in my semifinal after injuring my knee in my match yesterday. I would do anything to be able to play, but it is swollen and painful and playing will only make it worse. I want to say a huge thank you to the tournament and fans here," Halep said in a Twitter post.
Halep drew attention to herself when she took the train to Linz. The locals in Linz were surprised by how humble and simple Halep is. "Well everybody is talking about this but it's not the first time that I have done this.
I do normal things. I do separate tennis life from the normal life. I'm a normal person and I like to do the normal things. So it's not difficult to take the train, I really enjoyed it. It was fun. I mean, I was with the team, I don't like private jets. Anyway, I have never taken a private jet because I like to stay normal," Halep explained in Linz.
