Emma Raducanu 'amused' by Twitter thread

Former Manchester United star Michael Owen won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1998 and he was one of many who congratulated Emma Raducanu on winning this year's BBC SPOTY. After Raducanu was named the BBC SPOTY for 2021, Owen tweeted: "Congratulations to @EmmaRaducanu who thoroughly deserves to be crowned Sports Personality of the Year 2021.

Makes me feel very old that she’s the same age as I was waaaaay back in 1998." Owen was mocked on social media over the way he congratulated Raducanu and it caught the eye of the US Open champion. "Never normally see things online but was just sent the funniest thread… you are too funny out there," Raducanu tweeted.

Owen took it all well as he jokingly responded: "Haven’t tweeted for a few days as been busy reading all the hilarious replies to my tweet to Emma Raducanu."

Raducanu felt honored to win the award

"Thank you, it's such an honour just to be amongst these nominees.

Congrats to you and all your achievements," Raducanu said after winning the award. "I'm really happy with this, I've watched Sports Personality of the Year growing up and it's an honour to be amongst those past winners.

"I'm happy for British tennis as well, and that we've managed to get this award... again. "Thanks to all the fans and voters, this year has been insane. "I want to say thanks to my team, as well. "Congrats to the other nominees' teams as well, it's a team effort."

Andy Murray, a three--time Grand Slam champion, said Raducanu deserved to win the BBC SPOTY. "She created arguably one of the biggest sporting moments of the year, so yeah, she deserves to win. Anytime I won I always got accused of having no personality, she certainly is a fantastic personality. I hope she wins," Murray said.
