Former world No. 1 Simona Halep was delighted to meet her former coach Darren Cahill in Melbourne. Halep enjoyed success while working with Cahill as she became a Grand Slam champion and world No. 1. Halep and Cahill split but they are still on great terms and the Romanian is grateful for everything the Australian coach did for her.
"This person has taught me how to be the person I am today. I have touched the highest points in tennis because of him and I have no words to thank him for everything he has done for me and with me! The best five years, so good to see you today D!" Halep said in a Twitter post.
Halep aims a top-10 return
Halep is now ranked at No. 20 in the world and her main goal for 2022 is to return to the top-10. "To get back to Top 10. This is the main goal and this is actually the only one goal. But everything that comes along with it is a bonus and we will see.
But the focus is to get back to the Top 10," Halep said. Halep, who recently turned 30, ended 2021 on a positive way, having reached the Cluj-Napoca final and the Linz semifinal. "This was the goal after the US Open.
There actually, I felt I played decent and to be better I have to keep playing. That's why I chose small tournaments to get more matches, which I did. I had good matches and I felt very positive after Linz, even if I had to retire because of the knee," Halep revealed.
"I felt I was there, I'm still there, I just had to work more physically because during the year I was not able to work that much because of the injury that I had. Here I am and I'm very positive with what I've done and, honestly, confident for what is coming."
