Greg Rusedski: Ashleigh Barty is such an inspirational story

Former British No. 1 Greg Rusedski was full of praise for Ashleigh Barty after her Australian Open victory. Barty, who stepped away from the game a couple of years ago, now has three Grand Slam titles in her collection after beating Danielle Collins 6-3 7-6 (2) in the Australian Open final.

Barty captured her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2019 French Open and also won Wimbledon last year. Barty delighted the local crowd as she became the first Australian player since 1978 to win an Australian Open title. "@ashbarty is such an inspirational story.

Started out her career as a doubles specialist, left our sport to play professional cricket. Comes back & becomes world number 1, wins the @AustralianOpen today, for her 3rd major. 1st Australian woman to do so in 44 years!" Rusedski tweeted.

Barty not done

After winning the Australian Open, Barty noted "there is still work to be done." Barty now needs a US Open title to complete a Career Grand Slam. "There's still work to be done, without a doubt," Barty said.

"I feel very humble to be in such a select group. To be honest, I don't really feel like I belong with those champions of our sport. I'm still very much learning and trying to refine my craft every single day and get better and better.

"It's amazing to be able to have this experience and this opportunity on three different surfaces and be really consistent across the board. Ultimately that was one of the biggest challenges that [former coach] Jim [Joyce] set out for me when I was young - to be a complete player and be able to play on all surfaces.

"So to have a Grand Slam title on each surface is pretty amazing. I never thought it would ever happen to me. So very, very lucky and very humbled and privileged to be able to be a part of it."
